Opera in Space

We are pleased to announce a new project for Vaguely Sunny. We will be assisting Opera in Space - a compnay founded with the aim of re-thinking the performance of operatic repertory. They have chosen East Dene at Bonchurch as a venue to perform their highly acclaimed reinvention of Handel's masterpiece Semele on 21 and 22 October.

Recently returned from performing in Berlin, Opera in Space's Semele Project had it's inaugural showing to sell-out audiences at the Georgian Society, London. In this adaptable show, the performers take on multiple roles, interacting with the audience. The performers themselves play instruments and there is no theatrical set. Rather the performers make use of the space in original ways. Condensed to make it accessible to modern audiences, and with a specially written narrative verse and cast of five performers The Semele Project includes some of Handel's most memorable arias such as 'Where 'ere you walk".

The performers are classical musicians and actors with a range of professsional experiences such as singing at Glyndebourne, studying at English National Opera, singing with the Welsh National Youth Opera and acting in film and the West End.

The Semele project takes it's inspiration from the architectural features of the venue, ranging from churches to deserted buldings, and East Dene is a prefect romantic setting for the Marriage of Semele and Athamus. The fabric of the house is steeped in cultural history, being the former family home of the great Victorian poet Algernon Swinburne.

Opera in Space will be performing for two nights, and due to the intimate venue, tickets are limited to seventy people for each performance. Those purchasing tickets for the Saturday evening can also enjoy a delicious post-performance supper and meet the performers. Tickets are £20 or £35 for the performance on the 22nd including the post performance supper. Please send your order to Mrs Lucy DeVille, Rosehill, 24 Leeson Road, Ventnor PO38 1PX. Please include a cheque paybale to Mr J Robbins. If you require any further information about the event please ring Lucy on 01983-855058 or myself on 01983-730930.
